The beach in front the crowded and popular tourist resort of Aghia Pelaghia is a sandy beach, protected from the "meltemia" (northern summer winds) and from the northwestern winds blowing in the area; as a result the sea is usually calm. Close enough to Heraklion, Aghia Pelaghia is a very well organised beach: accommodation is plenty in hotels and rooms to let, taverns and cafes offer good food and drink and swimming and sunbathing facilities (sunbeds, umbrellas etc), as well as with sea sport facilities are available. It is considered as one of the best beaches of Northern Crete.
Anonymous beach, 1 kilometer East to Aghia Pelaghia
The small sandy beach, 1 kilometer far from Aghia Pelaghia at the East and before arriving to the beach of Lygaria, is situated at a distance of 17 kilometres far from Heraklion at the Northwest, 1 kilometer off the National Road to Rethymno. Being open to the North, the beach is affected by the "meltemia" (northern summer winds) and the other strong winds that blow in the area.
It is not an organised beach, but being close to the main beach of Aghia Pelaghia, it offers to the visitor calmness and isolation along with the facilities of accommodation, food and drink.
Access from Heraklion is very easy: public bus services are very frequent, taxi is a good and more comfortable alternative and you can always use rented or private car. If you choose to get there via the old road you should drive some more (some 25 kilometres from Heraklion) but you will enjoy the area and have the chance of sightseeing. Whatever toute you choose, you should be careful in the last 2-3 kilometres, as the winds blowing in the area may affect driving. |
