Kythira is known as the Isle of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. Because tourism is still quite undeveloped, Kythira looks like a calm refuge, with deserted beaches and a traditional lifestyle. There are only two museums on the island - The Byzantine and The Archaeological museums. There are many churches and monasteries to visit though. The church of Agia Sofia is actually located in a cave and is very interesting to see. Hora is the capital and offers a wonderful mixture of Venetian and Cycladic architecture consisting of a castle, English period buildings and little white and blue houses. Here you will find many hotels, rooms, shops, bars and excellent taverns. The other villages are Agia Pelagia, Livadi, Mylopotamos, Paleochora and Potamos. Agia Pelagia is a village and one of Kythira’s main ports. It is ideal for relaxing and swimming in the beautiful sandy and pebble beaches. It offers a good choice of hotels, rooms to let, restaurants and taverns. Livadi has become the most important commercial centre of the island, offering hotels, restaurants, gas station, many shops, cafeterias, cars and motorbikes rentals, rooms for rent, bakeries and travel agencies. Some of the interesting sites you will see here are the churches of Agios Andreas and the Panagia of Konteletou. Discover the many well-preserved English country houses while you‘re here too. Mylopotamos is one of the most beautiful medieval villages on the island. Lush, green and set in a wooded valley, this village is an oasis in summer. In the central square you will find a little church and a nice kafeneio standing under the shadow of the trees. A waterfall called “Neraida” (water nymph) finishes the lovely image of the square. Visit the English school and the Venetian fortress. Follow the beautiful stone paved road and discover the astonishing cliffs of Limionas and a rocky bay with fine white sand. Mylopotamos offers a few hostels, one restaurant near the waterfall and one lovely café. Paleochora village is the ruins of the medieval capital of Kythira. The little town is set on the hilltop at the head of the amazing Kako Langadhi gorge, where two deep canyons join and form a beautiful small lake. A sheer 100 metres drop surrounds it. It is full of fine Byzantine churches and chapels like the Church of Agia Barbara and the churches of Panagia which all have remains of wall paintings and frescoes. Potamos is the largest of the villages. It is the chief marketplace of the island as well. Of the sites you’ll want to visit, there is a beautiful English period bridge and a Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Theodore. Other church of interest due to their beautiful icons and frescoes are the Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Ilariotissa and the churches of Agios Ioannis, Agia Anastasia and the Saviour (Sotiros). There is the rocky beach of Agios Eleutherios, which is surrounded by huge cliffs. There are a large number of shops, hotels, rooms for rent, restaurants and fine taverns for your convenience and pleasure as well.
