Milos, one of the most seductive and hospitable of the Cyclades islands, is known as the “island of colours”. Thanks to its volcanic soil, in the spring, the island comes alive with the richly beautiful blooming flora, the sights and smells that overtake your senses. In the autumn, the waters turn blue, emerald, red and violet wonderfully contrasting with the white, pink and red rocks. It is also famously known as the place where the statue of Venus, now in the Louvre Museum in Paris, was discovered. There are more than 75 beaches, each one with its own characteristic. Again due to the volcanoes, which were once active here, the beaches may be white, or black, with sand, small stones or ground shells. Their waters are always clear and may be emerald, pale or deep blue. Sarakiniko is one of the most beautiful beaches of Milos and the most peculiar one. It is a unique place laden with white, volcanic rocks. The entire landscape is completely devoid of any plant life. So, the bright rocks contrasted with the deep turquoise of the surrounding waters create the sensation of standing on the moon. Firiplaka is a long beach with silver sand and huge coloured rocks on its coastline. The waters are really exotic: crystalline and shallow green-blue, they charm everyone who has the chance to swim in them. Papafragas is one of the most impressive sites of Milos. From the top of the rock, it looks like a huge natural swimming pool, a big cave carved out of the cliff face. A tiny path leads to the tiny strip of sand, forming the beach. Crystalline waters with changing colours depending on the weather and the light are welcoming the visitor and invite him to swim in their coolness. Deep dark see caves are surrounding the place. This amazing island has eight villages. They are Plaka, Plakes, Triovassalo, Pera Triovassalo, Apollonia or Pollonia, Zefiria, Tripiti and Adamas. The major ones being Adamas, Plaka and Pollonia. All have the various lodging facilities for you, along with the many eating establishments. Adamas (possibly meaning "diamond") is situated on the gulf and is a secure harbour. It is also referred to as the "downtown" place, because it is pivotal to all directions. Here you will find that it offers cafes, restaurants, shops, markets and discos, along with the majority of other services for your convenience. Visit the churches of Aghia Triada and Agios Halarambos while you‘re here. Plaka is the capital. Built on the hill, it is the most characteristic town. With narrow roads, houses of Cycladic style, and a few shops and restaurants, there is so much to see. Visit the Kastro, for wonderful views and unforgettable sunsets. Don’t miss out on visiting the Folk Museum and the Archaeological Museum. Pollonia is a small fisherman town built around a pretty, circular beach of fine sand. There are many restaurants available to you here. It is an ideal place for those who want to be out of the crowd but close to all the beaches. Tripiti offers the famous Catacombs and the ancient theatre, with unexpected interesting marble remains, which are a must see! The archaeological site in Apollonia and the wonderful historic temples, which are spread in nearly all the villages await your visit as well. So, come to Milos and you will be filled with the desire to embrace it. We guarantee that you will love it! |
