Salamina is a wooded island, rich in vegetation and graphic harbours. Wheat, olive oil and wine are produced here. Fishing too is a major industry. The towns are quaint, with pretty harbours, cobblestone streets, and neo-classical buildings. For those who want to enjoy the sea the southern part of the island, in particular the beaches of Kanakia, Kavi, Moulki, Vigla, Kamina and Peristeria are where you want to go. The southern coastline is mainly available for swimming and fishing. At the northern coastline you can swim on the smooth sand of Faneromeni. Search out the secluded bays where you can really enjoy the crystal clear waters. The capital of Salamina is commonly known as Koulouri and offers a variety of entertainment and nightlife. The Citadel of Ancient Salamina and the cavern of Eyripidi are worth a visit. At Paloukia next to a children playground an outdoor naval museum, (a school of rowing operates) On the hill of Patris you will find the Euripideo open-air theatre In the neoclassic building of the Cultural Association Euripides, the folklore museum and library is housed, which consists of 3500 volumes of books. There are two other art & culture libraries - the Salamina and the Ambelakia. Then there are the history and archaeological museums. At the Faneromeni Avenue, a few meters before the square of Boskou, Panagia of Boskou can be found, with wall paintings from 1758. The largest and most remarkable Byzantine monastery of the island is that of Faneromeni. The Metamorphosis of Sotira Monastery has available a guesthouse and workshop where some nuns draw icons and produce candles and hand woven fabrics. Other monasteries include the Monastery of St. Gerassimos and the Monastery of the Virgin. The pine-laden village of Moulki offers the Church of Kimisis of Theotokou and the Monastery of Saint Nikolaou Lemonion, which has available cells and guest rooms. The Byzantine temple of Saint John Kalibitou can also be seen here. At Eandio you will discover the remains of ancient Telamon. There are no large hotels on the island of Salamina but there are two economy (1-star) hotels and one value (2-star) hotel offered or you can easily island hop with the ferry shuttle services that are offered and make frequent trips for your convenience.
