Corfu / Kerkyra Island

Corfu is called the green island and is characterized by frequent rain and mild climate. It is for that reason a fertile island and has a variety of Corfu local agricultural products. The island is famous for its olive, wine, cereals and honey. Corfu's six-month olive season is the longest of any island in Greece and lush vineyards cover the island. They also grow many other fruits and vegetables here too. As soon as you will lay your eyes on Corfu, the overwhelming natural beauty will impress you.

John Fort, British Vice Consul once described this exquisite place of wonder as “exotic scenery, magical colours, flaming sunsets, romantic moonlight, luxurious vegetation, a riot of radiant flowers and colourful blooms, centuries old silver olive groves, glowing oranges, scented lemons, rich pergolas, sleepy lagoons, forgotten coves, bubbling springs, exciting caves, virgin beaches, golden sands, and pellucid turquoise emerald seas there is surely no other island in the whole universe to which these superlatives collectively apply.”

Another famous writer, William Shakespeare is said to have set his ‘Tempest’ here in Corfu.

Outdoor activities are a must here on this gorgeous island. Aqualand is one of the most amazing water sports adventure park in Europe. There is swimming at your choice of 11 beaches (one with a resort) horseback riding, diving and sailing/yachting. For those seeking tranquility and a place to commune with nature, there's even a wetland nature reserve (Lake Korisson) hidden away behind the south west coast.

The Corfu Trail is a must for all walkers and trekkers. Included on the trail are 25 sights for your enjoyment, including 17 Picturesque Villages, 2 castles, 4 Monasteries, a shrine, a ruined chapel with wall frescoes, 3 abandoned villages, 3 nature reserves, 2 of Corfu's highest peaks, a river, Venetian salt pans, dunes with a cedar and juniper forest, a cape, a river gorge, a folk museum, limestone, Lawrence Durrell's home and favorite swimming spot and Corfu's most famous view point, Bella Vista.

Don’t forget to visit Greece’s only cricket club. A heritage from the English occupation, it is the only place in Greece where the sport is practiced.

If you’re a museum buff, then you are in for a treat. On Corfu you will find the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, which is housed in the Church of Antivouniotissa (one of the oldest and richest churches in Corfu). The Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George house the Museum of Asian Art. It is the only museum of its kind in Greece. The Museum of Dionysios Solomos the National Greek Poet, The Numismatic Museum (objects related to banks), the Historical and Folkloric Museum and the Municipal Gallery are four more interesting spots to visit and learn about.

Is shopping your thing to do? Well, visit the town’s centre/shopping hub and shop to your heart‘s content. There are all kind of shops represented. The hub also has many tourist shop selling jewelry, leather goods, ceramics and olive wood objects. Tourist hotspots can definitely be found in Kavos, Benitses, Gouvia and Ipsos as well. Not to miss is the small fishing town of Kassiopi. It is the busiest in the area and it's where you will find the best people watching, exploring and shopping.

Corfu Island is also famous for its lively nightlife. The island has a great variety of bars and nightclubs, so you can dance and party all night long. Most of the Corfu nightlife is concentrated in the beach resorts such as Kavos, Roda, Ypsos, Gouvia and Dassia.

With a plethora hotels, villas, apts, bungalows, camping spots, studios and honeymoon suites, you’ll never be at a loss for a place to rest your head after a fun-filled day and night. Corfu is considered to be an ideal resort for your vacations as it has everything that you always wanted to admire. Come, visit today for your next fun-in-the-sun vacation and make a lifetime of memories.
