The largest of the Sporades, Skopelos is also the capital and historically the most important, due to its wealth, generated by fine locally produced wine. It is considered by many to be one of the prettiest harbour side towns in the Greek islands. It has a magnificent landscape of olive groves, fruit bearing trees and grapevines.

Skopelos has incredibly beautiful beaches and dreamlike secluded coves offering unbelievable clear and blue or emerald waters, fine golden sand and shaded by plane trees.

For those who enjoy walking or mountain biking, there are many trails, which pass through tiny hamlets, past peaceful country chapels, and often giving unexpected glimpses of the sea and wonderful views. Within one walk you can go through rolling hills and valleys filled with almond, plum, walnut, chestnut and olive trees, past numerous mountain springs, and up steep mountain tracks surrounded by the extensive pine forests. Here the only sounds are of the wind in the pines, birds singing, and the distant tinkle of goat bells.

Many hours can be spent just wandering around the narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards filled with flowers, finding the town's many Byzantine churches (there are over one hundred and twenty in the town alone), or just browsing in the small craft shops and boutiques.
There are numerous sacred churches, the acropolis of ancient Peparithos, the Church of Panagia and the Chapel of Agii Pandes. Visit the ruins of the royal palace and tomb of the Minoan king Staphylos while you’re here too.

There are three villages on the island, Glossa, Elios and Klima.

Glossa is built amphitheatrically on the side of a mountain. It is surrounded with pine forests, almond and plane trees. It consists of two-storey whitewashed houses with wooden balconies and terracotta-tile roofs. The port of this lovely village is called Loutraki. Ruins of Roman baths can be found near the port as well as the remains of the citadel of ancient Selinous and the Temple of Athena.

Elios is a seaside village also known as Neo Klima (new Klima). Full of pine trees, this village has new houses with terracotta-tiles roofs. A little wharf has been built of boats and has a little breakwater to protect it.

Between the villages of Glossa and Elios lies the colourful village of Klima. This seaside settlement has been turned into a tourist spot, offering all the necessary facilities to enjoy beautiful holidays with the blue of the Aegean Sea and the green of the rich pine trees.

In the island of Skopelos one can find many hotels and private villas with all modern comforts spread around the island. Most of the town's tavernas, bars and cafes are to be found along the waterfront, in which traditional Greek food and drinks can be enjoyed while watching the world go by.
