The beach of Ammoudara (means in greek "big sandy beach"); is open to the North it is affected by the northern winds.
It is very well organised beach, offering a wide range of accommodation facilities in several hotels of all categories and rooms to let; food and drink is plenty in the taverns, restaurants, cafes and bars of the village.
The beach has also full facilities for swimming, sunbathing (sunbeds, umbrellas), safety (lifeguard service) and sea sports (including a windsurfing school located at the western end of the beach; the course lasts one week). Some parts of this long beach are not organised at all; those who prefer a more natural environment, less crowded, will find here a place suitable for them.
Access from Herkleio is very easy by public buses with frequent service and taxi, as well as by private or rented car and motorbikes.
