The beach of Mononaftis is situated 1 kilometre far from the tourist resort of Aghia Pelaghia at the North, and at a distance of 17 kilometres from Heraklion (via the National Road to Rethymno) at the Northwest, some 3-4 kilometres off the National Road Heraklion-Rethymno. It is a sandy beach affected by the "meltemia" (northern summer winds).
Close enough to Heraklion and closer to Aghia Pelaghia, it is a well organised beach with accommodation facilities in hotels and rooms to let, taverns and cafes for food and drink and swimming and sunbathing facilities (sunbeds, umbrellas etc), as well as with sea sport facilities.
Access from Heraklion is easy by public bus with frequent service, taxi and rented or private car and motorbikes. If you follow the old road the beach is found a bit more afar, some 25 kilometres from Herakeleio. However, the landscape is fascinating. And, if you combine your swimming with a visit to the places worthseeing of the area, for instance to the Savathianon Monastery, then your vacation will have much more interest.
