It is located within a distance 28 kilometers from the baths of Edipsos and the location where this village is built, on a hill on the peninsula of Lichada is the reason for its magnificent view of the sea. Its population during the last years is fluctuating at about 1000 round-the-year inhabitants. You can get here from Edipsos via a seaway in much less time than you would need by car. Also, if you choose to get here via the sea you will have the chance to admire Lichadonisia islands, one of the most significant attractions of the area. The name of the loctaion derrives, as many others in South Evia, from the antique year. According to estimations o the archaeologists it matches ancient settlement Dion, which was among the greek cities that participated at the Trojan War.
According to the legend, Dianira, wife of half-god Hercules, was told Centaur Nessos that her husband had fallen for another woman, beautiful Ioli. When Hercules was informed of that, he discharged his arrows at Nessos, who, just before dying, advised Dianira to to give her husband a kirtle saturated with his blood, assuring her that if Hercules wore it he would return to her forever. Dianira, being naive and jealous, believed him and gave servant Lichas a kirtle she had saturated with Nessos’ blood to hand to Hercules, who was preparing to to climb mount Krineo in order to thank the gods with ceremonies and sacrifices. However, the moment he wore it, the poisonous blood of Nessos started burning his flesh and while suffering tremendous pain he grabbed Lichas and threw him up in the air. The body of the unlucky servant ended up very far from the spot, in the sea of Evia and from his parts that were scattered through the sea Lichadonisia Islands were formed.
