Gialtra is a rather big village of a population of approximately 2000 people, located 19 kilometers western of the Bath City of Edipsos, on the peninsula of Lihada. The settlement used to be known in antiquity as “Athenaeum”, because lots of Athenians moved in the spot after the destruction of their city. The name by which the village is known from the 15th century onwards results from the merging of the words “igia” (“health” in Greek) and “loutra” (“baths” in Greek), because of the warm healing springs of the area, also known as “Mpania”.

The village is surrounded from pine trees and vineyards, where the fine wine of Gialtra, of excellent quality and taste, is produced. In a prominent spot there is the “Windmill” of Gialtra. There are also some Byzantine monuments in the area, very well worth a visit, such as the ruins of the temple of Agios Nikolaos, dating back to the 17th century, where a few wall-paintings can still be seen until this day.
From time to time, there are some local festivities taking place, distinguished for their authenticity. During those festivals you will have the chance to try all of the local specialties, from lamb or pork “kontosouvli” to fresh fish and seafood. Gialtra have been following the general tourist development of the area and are now able to offer the visitor modern and luxurious lodging facilities and a variety of restaurants and means of entertainment.
