Zaros is one of the big villages of the Heraklion prefecture with about 3500 permanent inhabitants and is located in a lush green area, within a distance of approximately 42 kilometers from the city of Heraklion. In the village you will be able to find two spacious hotels and several rooms to let. There is also a Town Hall, a police station, a post office, a primary school and a high school. Within a distance of 2 kilometers from Zaros there is the lake of Zaros with its water factory and a breeding ground for trouts and salmons as well as several restaurants. Within a small distance (around 3,5 kilometers from Zaros you will be able to discover the picturesque village of Niritos, which is definitely worth visiting in order to admire its remarkable traditional architecture. In the area there is also the cave of Kamares which was discovered accidentally by a farmer in the late 19th century. Inside the cave the archaeologists found several colourful Minoan vessels, which you are able to see today in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
