The village of Plakias is located within a distance of 40 kilometers away from the city of Rethimno. It is a picturesque coastal settlement of approximately 250 permanent residents, surrounded by mountains and it belongs to the municipality of Finikas. Its inhabitants used to be occupied in fishing, however during the last few decades Plakias was transformed into a frequented tourist resort. The main reason for that was its remarkable sandy beaches of a total length of almost 1,5 kilometers, which attract lots of visitors during the months of the summer. Other sights of particular interest in the general area include the Monastery of Preveli and the youth hostel which is preferred by people who like a more adventurous kind of vacations. You can get to Plakias either through the gorge of Kotsifos or the Kourtaliotiko gorge, both recognized as locations of particular natural beauty. In Plakias, apart from the youth hostel you will be able to find other lodging facilities, a camping site, both secluded and organized beaches offering the ability to try some water sports, cafeterias and restaurants. |
