Beautiful Chora of Naxos is the capital and the main port of the island. It is built on the coast of the west side of the island and has approximately 4000 inhabitants. Its unique monuments serve as proof of its longstanding history and culture. The impossing Venetian Castle, the archaeological site of Grotta, Portara and the archaeologocial museum have a lot to show as far as the history of Chora is concerned. The Old Town, jewel of Naxos, with its whitewashed houses, lush green courtyards and narrow alleys fit perfectly with the style of the New Town. Tourist activity in Naxos has been increasing constantly for the past ten years and as a result there is need for more and more new tourist facilities. Big hotel complexes and tourist shops are only some of the new occupations of the inhabitants, however a big percentage of the island’s population is still occupied in farming. The land of Naxos has always been fertile and the island never had lack of something fundamental due to this fact. The inhabitants have learned to love the land and its products and as a result some of them, especially the elder ones, appear rather reluctant to engage in tourist business. In Chora, though, you will be able to find lots of hotels and rooms to let, capable of offering a very enjoyable stay through providing all the luxury and comfort you’ll ever need, while on the seaside of Chora you will have the chance to have a great time until early in the morning. There are lots of beautiful cafeterias and bars to chose from in order to enjoy your drink right next to the sea. For those who are not very fond of wild nightlife, there are some beautiful taverns serving delicious local specialties accompanied by the famous local wine. Chora is the start point of most buslines leading to the rest of the villages and beaches of the island. |
